The ALS clinic (Expert Center)

After the 2002 general meetings, and thanks to the resolute action of the Association for research on ALS and other motor neuron diseases (ARS), funds to finance so-called reference centers were released by the Ministry. In 2003 and 2004, 17 centers will be created. Their goals are:
  • To allow the realization of a diagnosis as early as possible
  • Optimize patient care (in and out of the hospital) in a multidisciplinary approach
  • Train the caregivers (in and out of the hospital)
  • To organize research in their region
  • The center of Montpellier is the largest in the province by its size. An activity dedicated to ALS has existed since the 1970s (with Professor Jean Cadilhac and Professor William Camu). The team, which has been formed, is composed of caregivers as well as volunteers of the association with whom it works in close collaboration.

In 2003 and 2004, two circulars will define the specifications for the creation of 17 SLA centers in France. It's a unique organization for France and for ALS in the world.

A budget is allocated to the centers according to the number of patients followed, allowing the Montpellier center to count to date 15 professionals, full-time or part-time, who are involved in the multidisciplinary consultation.
